چکیده

Twenty-four mature, nonpregnant crossbred cows were used in a 42-d feeding study to evaluate the effects of dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) on performance, dry matter intake, and pH of blood, urine, and uterine flushing. All cows were housed individually and provided free-choice access to bahiagrass hay and a corncottonseed meal supplement. Two treatments were randomly allocated to cows to create a negative and positive DCAD. Treatment DCAD differences were created by the inclusion Chloride and Sodium sources into the daily supplement. Effects of treatment on cow acid/base balance were determined by the measurement of blood, urine, and uterine flush fluid pH on d 0, 21, and 42. Final cow body weight and average daily gain was not different among treatments. On d 21 and 42, blood pH was less for low vs high DCAD cows. Similarly, urine pH was less on d 21 and 42 for low vs high DCAD cows. The pH of uterine flush fluid tended to be less on d 21 (6.41 vs 6.22) and d 42 (6.39 vs 6.13) for low vs high DCAD cows. Hay dry matter intake did not differ among treatments in period 1, but was less for low vs high DCAD cows in period 3. These data suggest that differences in DCAD will alter acid-base physiology in beef cows. Altering pH of the uterine environment may affect reproductive success of the beef cow and should be investigated further.

Effect of dietary cation-anion difference on measures of acid-base physiology and performance in beef cattle.

Dietary constituents can affect cow acid-base physiology and uterine pH. Dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) has been shown to affect cow acid-base physiology, but the effect on uterine pH has not been demonstrated. The objective of this work was to determine if DCAD [(Na + K + 0.15Ca + 0.15Mg) - (Cl + 0.60S + 0.50P)] could affect cow DMI, acid-base physiology, and uterine pH, and second, to...

Effect of Cation-Anion Difference on Measures of Acid-Base Physiology and Performance in Beef Cattle

In Florida, the dietary cation-anion balance (DCAD) characteristic of bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) can be highly variable. This is a result of fluctuations in all four elements making up the core DCAD equation, Na, K, Cl, and S. Bahiagrass receiving annual contributions of S from ammonium sulfate fertilizer can accumulate high levels of S. In a previous study (Arthington et al. 2002), bahiagra...

The Interaction between Trolox and 4,4’-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2’-disulfonic Acid on Hypoxic Pulmonary Vasoconstriction in the Isolated Rabbit Lung

Background: The mechanism of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) is still debatable. It has been proposed that reactive oxygen species (ROS) might be involved in HPV. However, there is no special transporter for superoxide anion in the cell membrane and it may release from the cells via anion exchanger. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the interaction of ROS and anion ex...

Acid and Base Catalyzed Transesterification of Animal Fats to Biodiesel

The present study has been focused on the acid and base transesterification of animal fats (dairy cow and beef) to produce biodiesel by varying process parameters such as catalyst amount, catalyst nature, reaction time and temperature. The maximum biodiesel yield after acid catalysis was 94.1 ± 2.43 and 98.4 ± 2.3 percent for dairy cow and beef t...
